What has been happening in the motorcycle retailing sector
2021 and 2022 were amongst the strongest years for bike sales in over a decade. This despite the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic and economic turmoil caused by the was in the Ukraine. This is due in part to:
- the introduction of more 'clean air zones' in towns and cities across the UK and the expansion of London's ultra-low emission zone
- improved range and performance of electric bikes (electric bike sales were up 146% in 2021)
- growth in the adventure, custom and modern bike markets
- improvements in rider safety
- scooters becoming fashionable
- more women taking up motorcycling
- increased TV coverage of motorcycle events and races, such as the BBC's coverage of the Moto GP series
- increase in demand for 'last mile' delivery services
Total registrations of new motorcycles, scooters and mopeds rose by 8% between 2019 and 2022. However, inflation and rising interest rates has caused sales to fall in the first half of 2023.
The best selling motorcycles in the first half of 2023 were:
- road sport bikes (super sports and sports tourers)
- competition bikes
- bikes popular with the leisure market for trail and adventure riding
As well as all model ranges (two and three wheelers) having to comply with Euro 5 emission regulations from 1 January 2020, all bikes over 125cc must be fitted with ABS.
In 2016 the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency issued new moped and motorcycle rules setting out the age and qualification requirements for riding different types of motorcycles. You can find flowcharts allowing the easy application of the rules on the GOV.UK website.
The paper tax disc was abolished on 1 October 2014 and vehicle tax is no longer transferable. Dealers can, however, continue to tax motorcycles on behalf of the new owner.
